Minors Beat indisciplined Broadford (6th August 2005)
The minor hurlers are one step closer to a quarter final spot with a victory over Broadford, in this playoff match. It was a game that saw Broadford finish with ten men. The minor C championship is thirteen a side, with two in the full forward and full back lines. The match was played in very poor conditions at Bodyke with very little atttractive, fast open hurling on view. Liam "Goose" Walsh was doing most of the damage in a first half that saw Smith O' Briens look the hungrier outfit. Broadford had their first man sent off for a strike on Bridgetowns Pa Vaughan, and leading at half time 2-3 to 0-4, Smith O' Briens were favourites to close the game out in the second half.
This they did with little trouble. Niall Toomey was clearing alot of ball in defence, while Mikey Reddan looked assured in the Smith O' Briens goal. The referee effectively finished the game as a contest when sending off a Broadford defender, for a well timed shoulder tackle. A free against the player was harsh, but a straight red was mind boggling. In a scrappy affair, Dermot McCarthy and Declan O'Halloran tagged on further scores to keep the minors hope alive. The final score Smith O' Briens 3-9 Broadford 0-6. They now face Bodkye in a playoff for the quarter final spot on Tuesday next.
Smith O' Briens: Mikey Reddan, Brian McInerney, Niall Toomey, Gavin Power, Rory Cahill, Dereck Conway, Dwayne Sheedy, Anthony O'Sullivan (1-0), Dermot McCarthy (1-0), Pa Vaughan (0-1), Liam Walsh (0-4), Declan O'Halloran (1-1), Damien McCarthy (0-1).
Earlier in this years Minor C hurling championship:
Whitegate stunned the Smith O' Briens boy with a late surge to come from five points to win by four. Whitegate 4-11 Smith O' Briens 2-13.
Beat Bodkye by six points
Lost to Broadford.
